Seahorses are one of the ocean's most magical and peculiar creatures. They swim upright, mate for life (in some species), and in a remarkable twist of nature โ the males get pregnant and give birth.
Are Seahorses Fish?
Yes โ seahorses (Hippocampus sp.) are true fish, despite looking nothing like one. They have a swim bladder to control buoyancy, gills to breathe, and a dorsal fin to propel themselves. They are the only fish that swim upright.
Why Do Male Seahorses Give Birth?
Male seahorses have a special brood pouch on their belly. The female deposits her eggs into the pouch, the male fertilizes them internally, and carries the developing babies for 10โ25 days before giving birth to up to 1,000 tiny seahorses at once โ called fry.
How Do Seahorses Hunt?
Seahorses are ambush predators. They cling to coral or seagrass with their prehensile tail, blend into their surroundings using camouflage, then snap up prey with a sudden, vacuum-like strike. They have no teeth and no stomach โ food passes through their digestive system so quickly they must eat almost constantly.
How Small Are Seahorses?
The pygmy seahorse is the world's smallest at just 0.6 inches โ smaller than your thumbnail. The largest is the big-belly seahorse of Australia at up to 14 inches.
