When most people hear "great white shark," they think of the movie Jaws. But the real great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is far more fascinating โ and far less terrifying โ than Hollywood would have you believe.
How Big Is a Great White Shark?
Great white sharks can reach up to 20 feet (6 meters) in length and weigh over 5,000 pounds. Females are typically larger than males. Despite their size, they are incredibly agile and can burst to speeds of 25 mph when hunting.
What Do Great White Sharks Eat?
Great whites are apex predators. Adults primarily hunt seals, sea lions, dolphins, and large fish. Young great whites eat fish and rays. They use a "bite and release" strategy โ they bite prey, wait for it to weaken, then feed. They do not hunt humans for food.
Are Great White Sharks Dangerous?
Great whites are responsible for more recorded unprovoked attacks on humans than any other shark species โ but attacks are still extremely rare. Globally, sharks kill fewer than 10 people per year. You are far more likely to be struck by lightning. Most "attacks" are investigatory bites โ the shark is curious, not hungry.
Why Great White Sharks Are Vulnerable
Despite their fearsome reputation, great white sharks are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. They are slow to mature (taking 26 years to reach adulthood!), reproduce rarely, and are threatened by finning, bycatch, and trophy hunting. Humans kill an estimated 100 million sharks per year.

- Their only known natural predator is the orca (killer whale).
Why Great White Sharks Matter
As apex predators, great white sharks keep ocean ecosystems in balance. They cull sick and weak animals, preventing disease from spreading through prey populations. A healthy ocean needs sharks. Protecting them protects everything below them in the food chain.
